Food for Life

Photographs of food are common. Cookery programmes, recipe books, magazine features, even advertising has inured us somewhat to the beauty of food, and too often focuses on the end result rather than on the ingredients and the magic involved in turning something natural into something different, but equally wondrous.

What is unusual about this book is that the photographs are by someone who works with food and who is fascinated by the alchemy involved in turning ingredient into dish. And Kevin Thornton is as passionate about his photography as he is about his food. So this book contains beautiful images of some of the amazing ingredients that he finds, and photographs, in nature, as well as the dishes he creates for his Michelin starred restaurant, Thornton’s, in Dublin.

The purpose of this book is to share Kevin’s insight into food, but also to raise money for acute meningococcal disease. In 1996 Kevin and Muriel Thornton’s son Conor was cured of life-threatening meningococcal septicaemia by a revolutionary treatment called Protein C. All profits from the book go to aid research into this treatment.  Irish Times, Dublin.

“Kevin Thornton’s imagination is evident in this book, the photographs as exhilarating as his discovery of different combinations of ingredients to create the perfect meal. Congratulations all around” – Michael Stipe, R.E.M.
